The results of the 7th Engineering Construction Industry BIM Competition have been announced, with MCC Huatian's Industrial Environment and Energy Branch receiving a third prize in the Industrial and Energy category for its project "Digital Energy Revolution of Industrial Utility Networks Based on BIM Technology." This recognition from an authoritative industry body underscores the company's deep expertise and sustained progress in the fields of BIM and digital twins.
Organized by the China Construction Enterprise Management Association, the competition is a highly prestigious national event in the domestic BIM sector, drawing thousands of engineering firms across the industry.
The award-winning project addresses the persistent challenges faced by large steel enterprises in managing aging utility networks, including vast plant areas, multiple media types, nearly 70 kilometers of pipelines, missing as-built drawings, and the common industry issues of lack of visibility, unclear calculations, and poor regulation. The solution developed is the first comprehensive digital twin solution for an entire utility network in China's metallurgical industry, featuring a number of differentiated innovations. These include millimeter-precision point cloud data collection using UAV aerial surveys and 3D laser scanning, a proprietary multi-disciplinary collaborative modeling system that bridges Revit with fluid simulation software through self-developed PCF data conversion plugins, standardized utility component libraries, and offline lightweight digital delivery tools. The project establishes a full-chain technical route covering surveying, reverse modeling, multi-physics simulation, intelligent diagnostics, and operational optimization. By creating a virtual replica of over ten media systems including steam, gas, and compressed air, and integrating thermodynamic and fluid dynamics algorithms for full-network soft sensing of temperature, pressure, and flow, the system precisely identifies bottlenecks such as pipeline constraints, insulation failures, and redundant or obsolete lines. This is complemented by infrared smart inspection and an online energy diagnostic expert system, forming a closed loop of digital modeling, simulation, diagnostics, and retrofit optimization.
Once fully implemented, the solution will significantly improve steam utilization efficiency, saving nearly 600,000 tons of steam annually while increasing the full-load runtime of waste heat power generation units. The project has received high recognition from the client and serves as a replicable benchmark for energy conservation and low-carbon retrofitting of existing utility networks in the steel sector, with strong potential for cross-industry application.
